Industrial vehicle with hydraulic mechanical parts lubricated with fire resistant hydraulic fluids driving through a quarry

Fire resistant hydraulic fluids

Hydraulic fluids play an important role in the smooth operation of a well-balanced and well-designed hydraulic system. We combine a vast armoury of chemistries and excellent application expertise to help you select the correct ingredients for your fire resistant hydraulic fluid.

A good fire resistant hydraulic fluid will enable the hydraulic system to operate smoothly and support:

  • Heat transfer
  • Power transfer
  • Corrosion prevention
  • Lubrication.

Additionally, hydraulic lubricants used in industries such as coal mining, iron and steel production, automotive manufacturing or used on aircraft and ships must have fire-resistant properties, due to the high temperatures they are exposed to. Hydraulic lines can be subjected to very high pressures and if a hydraulic line in close proximity to an ignition source fails, there is a high potential for the system to catch fire and sustain a spray flame, which can result in catastrophic consequences. Fortunately, the widespread use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids has dramatically reduced the risk and limited the damage caused by fires resulting from hydraulic system failures.

Fire-resistant hydraulic fluid classifications

We group our fire-resistant hydraulic lubricant components under the generic descriptor of HF, and further classify according to their chemical composition under sub-groups such as HFA, HFB, HFC and HFD

HFA (containing more than 80% water) & HFB (containing around 45% water)

In both these groups we offer a range of speciality emulsifiers and oleochemically derived synthetic ester base oils branded under industry recognised trade names of Atlas™, Hypermer™, Tween™ and Priolube™. These products provide the formulator with the ability to control emulsion particle size, particle size distribution, long term dynamic stability and to provide some degree of lubrication to the formulation.

HFC (containing around 30% water)

Our Emkarox ™ polyalkylene glycols provide outstanding shear stable thickening properties, excellent hydrodynamic lubrication properties, good compatibility with elastomers, good heat conductivity and excellent viscosity temperature profiles.

HFD (water free)

Our Priolube™ ester base oils are recommended for use where excellent lubrication, good oxidation stability, cleanliness of operation and low environmental impact are the main priority for the formulator.
