Industrial gear oil additives

Today's industrial gear driven equipment is designed to perform in many applications, often having to withstand harsh environments. Typically, gear boxes are becoming smaller and are being made from lighter and more sophisticated materials, yet they must be more durable than ever before. As a result, greater demands are being placed upon the gear oil lubricant and greater consideration must be given to the use of high-performance base fluids and additives.

We have an extensive synthetic base oil offering based on polyalkylene glycol (PAG) and ester technologies, branded under the Emkarox™ and Priolube™ trade names. These products are designed to allow gears to operate at maximum performance levels.

The importance of gear lubrication 

There are many technical and performance demands placed on lubricants for gears and it is critical that the correct oil is selected for use in the gear system for maximum operating efficiency and reliability.

Properties inherent to the oil such as biodegradability and renewability may be required where there are environmental considerations, moreover incidental food contact approval may be sought for certain applications. 

In gearboxes themselves the gear lubricant is expected to prevent wear and micro-pitting, perform at high operating temperatures and also on start-up after standstill as well as maintain its integrity and deliver long service life.

We can work with you to help you overcome the technical challenges and deliver solutions for your requirements. We offer both polyalkylene glycol and ester base fluids and are also able to suggest products for use in PAO/ester blends for Flender approval. The table below shows the benefits of each base fluid type.

Flender (Siemens) approved formulations must meet a strict set of performance criteria. Our Priolube 3970 ester is approved for Flender formulations.

Friction modifiers for industrial gear oils

Organic friction modifiers have traditionally struggled to find use in gear oils due to their tendency to promote emulsification.
