Two large container vessels docked with loaded cargo at a container port requiring environmentally acceptable ester base oil lubricants

Ester base oils

Esters are a class of synthetic chemistry that are generally created in the reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. Our ester base oils are a broad and diverse family of Group V synthetic base stocks which can be customised to meet specific physical and performance properties. We have developed an industry leading range of Priolube™ ester base oils.

What properties can ester base oils offer formulated lubricants?

  • Biodegradability
  • Low toxicity
  • Reduced friction
  • Reduced wear, high temperature stability
  • Low temperature flowability
  • Low volatility
  • Clean burn properties
  • High viscosity index
  • Reduced flammability
  • Excellent solvency properties.

Esters have been components in the formulation of lubricants for many years and are the preferred base oil in many severe applications. The percentage of ester oil used can vary anywhere from 1 to 99% depending upon the desired properties and the type of ester employed.

What types of esters do we offer?

As a world leader in the supply of environmentally acceptable base oils, our ester product range includes;

  • Complex
  • Mono
  • Petrochemical
  • Trimellitate
  • Self-emulsifying
  • Saturated and unsaturated esters.

These esters are individually suited to challenges that can arise in industrial, marine, aviation and automotive applications.

How can I formulate environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) with esters?

Many of our products designed for environmentally sensitive areas are made using renewable and sustainable raw materials; almost all are ultimately biodegradable and have low toxicity towards aquatic organisms. Our products are also European Eco Label certified (on the LuSC list), suitable for formulation under VGP and most are USDA Biopreferred®.

European Ecolabel (LuSC list)

European (EU) Ecolabel for lubricants promotes the development and use of lubricating products with a reduced environmental impact. Lubricant products satisfying the requirements of European Ecolabel must be biodegradable, have low aquatic toxicity, and where palm oil or palm kernel oil is used, must be sustainably sourced.

Whilst lubricants must comply with strict environmental criteria to be classed as Ecolabel compliant, they must also meet minimum technical performance standards.
